Medicare Rebates
Medicare rebates may apply under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative if you have a referral from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician.
A copy of the referral or a mental health care plan needs to be brought to your first appointment.
If eligible, your medical specialist will register you with Medicare and you can then claim a rebate for up to 10 sessions (in a calendar year) with a psychologist of your choice.

You do not need a referral from your medical specialist to make an appointment.
However you do need a referral letter and a mental health care plan from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician should you wish to attend under the Medicare initiative and receive a rebate.
